Movie Labyrinth

Lately I've been on a labyrinthian movie-watching project. It all started with wanting to see all 90 movies that have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, but I've been diverted here and there.

My observation is that AMPAS Best Picture winners are not necessarily great movies (or even good), but are snapshots into the important social issues in America for the past couple of years.

The British Film Institute is a far better reference for finding truly great films.

That being said, I'm going to play a little catch-up on the movies I've been recently watching.

This little gem won a special award at the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929. Best Picture was Wings--which is definitely worth watching--but nowhere near as beautiful as Sunrise, which is one of my all-time favorite movies. I even purchased a copy of it, which is something I very rarely do.  It's directed by FW Murnau, who you may know for Nosferatu, the first Dracula movie (starring the very creepy Max Schreck!) I love German Expressionism, and Sunrise is one of the finest examples of German Expressionism there is.
